John O'Ferrall Walking Cane


John O'Ferrall II (PIC) (PIC) was born 1797, in Berkeley Co., VA, son of Ignatius O'Ferrall and Frances McKiernan. On 22 OCT 1822, he married Eliza Humrichouse, daughter of Peter Humrichouse and Mary Hadelman. Eliza Humrichouse was born 2 SEP 1798 in Hagerstown, MD. She passed away early in life, 21 MAY 1835, after the birth of twins, Eliza and Patrick. She is buried in the cemetery of the Zion Reformed Church, Hagerstown, MD, near her father and mother.

John O'Ferrall, married, a second time, to Jane Laurens Green 10 DEC 1839, who was born in Salem, VA, 10 NOV 1817. John and Jane had six children, including Charles Triplett O'Ferrall who was popular in Virginia political circles and became governor of the state.

John and Jane O'Ferrall owned and operated a resort hotel in Berkeley Springs , VA (later WV), and John was county clerk. Jane raised both her children and John's childen by his former wife. Jane also became suragate grandmother to the children of her step children. I have a letter from her to my grandmother, Helen Hand Fox, that is signed, "Your Loving Grandmother."

John O'Ferrall passed away unexpectedly in 1856 and is buried in the old Catholic Cemetery in Berkeley Springs. Jane outlived John, passing away in Bridgewater, VA, MAY 1891, and is buried in Woodbine Cemetery, Harrisonburg, VA. Her headstone has not survived.

  1. John William O'Ferrall (PIC) , b. 27 SEP 1823, in Martinsburg, VA, (later WV) d. 10 DEC 1895, in Clarke Co., MS, buried in Enterprise, MS.
    m. 1) 7 JUN 1851 Margaret Rew Tolson b. 27 OCT 1825, d. 30 APR 1867. She is buried in Enterprise, MS.
    m. 2) 30 SEP 1868 Helen Gains Walton b. 28 NOV 1840, d. 26 NOV 1925, buried Enterprise, MS.
    John W. O'Ferrall became prominent in the Civil War, rising to the rank of General.

  2. Ignatius Francis Falkner O'Ferrall, (PIC) b. 28 NOV 1825 in VA, d. 31 MAY 1883 in MN, m. 10 DEC 1857 Amelia Harris b. 10 AUG 1837 in Mississippi d. 2 JUN 1912 in Chatfield, MN. Both are buried next to their children in a Chatfield cemetery. It is known that Frank O'Ferrall, along with his brothers spent time in Calif. around 1853 to 1855, but Frank came back east before 1857. After their marriage, Frank and Amelia O'Ferrall settled in Minnesota but shortly thereafter went by covered wagon to the California and Nevada gold/silver area where they prospered and daughter, Medora, was born in San Francisco. The family retured from the west by boat to Panama where they crossed by ground transportation and then came by boat up the east coast. After a visit with relatives in western Virginia, they returned to MN where Frank prospered as a land broker and speculator. Later Frank and Amelia brought his neice, Helen Hand (my grandmother) from Mississippi to Minnesota and raised her as their own.

  3. Peter Kelley O'Ferrall, b. 17 JAN 1827. In the census of 1850, Peter O'Ferrall is shown in the household of his grandmother, Frances McKiernan O'Ferrall, and in the profession of innkeeper. About 1853, he migrated to Calif., marrying Esther Onyett, 16 OCT 1856, in Prairie House, CA. She was from Evansville, IN, born 24 JAN 1840, daughter of John Onyett and Amy Gilbert. Ester died 4 FEB 1879 in Covelo, CA; Peter died May 1905. Both are buried in Valley View Cem., Covelo, CA.

  4. Laurence Michael O'Ferrall, b. 12 FEB 1830 in Bath, VA, m. M. Hand. I have a letter from father John O'F to his daughter Eliza in which John shows some concern about Laurence's whereabout. We do have evidence of his being in Maryville, CA in 1855. Wish I know more about what happened to him.

  5. Richard Henry O'Ferrall, b. 28 MAR 1832 in Morgan Co., VA. In the census of 1850, Richard O'Ferrall was listed in the household of his grandmother, Frances McKiernan O'Ferrall, and in the profession of merchandising. About 1853, he migrated to Calif., spend a short time in Marysville CA., and married Elizbeth Christie, 27 OCT 1861, in Chico, CA. She was born 26 AUG 1839 in Carey, OH and died 7 FEB 1882 in San Francisco, CA. Richard lived out his life in Chico, CA, passing away 20 AUG 1878.

  7. Eliza Mary Frances O'Ferrall, b. 5 MAY 1835 in Berkeley Springs, VA, d. 18 JUL 1908 near Meehan, MS.
