John Spinks was born 26 DEC 1785 in N. C. son of Presley Spinks and Mary (Molly) Dickens. In the late 1700's he moved with his father, mother, and other relatives to Warren Co., GA where he spent most of his development years. In the early 1800's John Spinks bought a farm in eastern Marengo Co., AL. Across the county line in Wilcox Co., he met Margaret Kelly, b. 11 NOV 1792, d. 27 NOV 1853, daughter of Peter Kelly, and Jane Ewing, who owned a farm in western Wilcox. John Spinks and Margaret Kelly married 3 FEB 1818 per the very first marriage recorded in the Marengo Co. courthouse.
In 1834 John and Margaret Spinks moved to Kemper Co., MS, where, as pioneers , they farmed and lived out their lives.
Of their nine children, John and Margaret Spinks had five boys, all of whom fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy. All five came home and led productive lives after the war.
Margaret Kelly Spinks passed away 27 NOV 1853, and John Spinks passed away
28 AUG 1861. They are both buried in Liberty Baptist Cemetery in Kemper
Co., MS.
