Johan Alfred Tornwall (PIC) was born in Sweden 3 JAN 1842, the son of Sven Johan Tornvall and C. L. Nilsdotter. In 1864, he came to America, settling first in Chicago. A year later, he was joined by his wife, Anna Sophia Redel Svensdotter (PIC) son Gothard, and daughter Hilma Sophia. While in Chicago, Johan and Anna had a son Alfred Pierre and a daughter Anna Josephine.

Later the family moved to Mississippi, settling in Pittsboro, Calhoun Co. where Johan was a tanner, harness maker, and cobbler. The 1900 census says that he was a naturalized citizen.
